Mycobacterium avium is a slow-growing, acid-fast bacillus in the family Mycobacteriaceae, and the most common non-tuberculous mycobacterium causing disease in humans, particularly disseminated infection in severely immunocompromised individuals such as those with advanced HIV/AIDS. It is ubiquitous in the environment, found in water, soil, and biofilms, and also causes avian tuberculosis in birds and Johne's disease-related subspecies in ruminants (subsp. paratuberculosis). The genome of M. avium (~5.5 Mb) includes a large repertoire of genes for lipid metabolism, cell-wall biosynthesis, and a pathogenicity island acquired by horizontal transfer.

How to read this: A value outside a failure limit fails QC. Within the failure limits, values beyond a warning limit are borderline and worth a manual look; values within the warning limits pass that criterion. A dash means that no bound is defined on that side.
